About the project

kanvas, the new immersive event and art space in Dubai is pleased to announce the “Revival of Aesthetics 2.0” immersive experience curated by Ivan Nefedkin and in partnership with Generative Gallery.

The exhibition, on display again for the second time between May 1st to May 31st, 2023, showcases the work of the Azerbaijani artist Orkhan Mammadov. With the help of a state-of-the-art machine learning algorithm he analyzed more than 150,000 carpet compositions and sketches inspired by the cultural heritage of carpet weaving in the East, and composed a fascinating interactive immersive show from the results.

Many different carpet genres share ornamental forms such as geometric patterns, floral motifs, and calligraphic shapes, but some combinations are specific to certain regions. Mammadov’s work merges the traditional concept of “pattern” with the modern use of machine algorithms that recognize regularities in data, resulting in a series of imaginary rugs that have never before existed, while also exploring the potential and problems of data as a resource for artistic inspiration.

As we enter the digital age and the metaverse, it is increasingly important to preserve our cultural roots and traditions. Mammadov’s work allows us to step into the new world without losing sight of our ancient heritage. By highlighting the sources and meanings of the ornaments on display, the artist invites visitors to engage with the background history and regional sources of these cultural treasures. Whether you are a fan of carpet weaving or simply interested in the intersection of art and technology, the “Revival of Aesthetics 2.0” exhibition is an experience not to be missed.
